The only correct way to use the transformer inputs on the 828 with line level sources is to use a 20dB XLR pad. :
A DI box like the op asked is also a “correct way” to connect -10dbv Line level sources to a Microphone Preamplifier’s input. The DI will respect both Levels and Impedances
Most DI’s have a PAD at the input, 0db’s for Guitar/Bass, -20db’s for Line level -10dbv (keyboards, samplers) and -40dbs for Speaker Level.
Anyway, connecting a Line level device directly to the Alice Microphone input is also quite nice if you want to distort or dirty up that line level source, expect distortion and a limited frequency response, but it might be nice for specific tasks. The 828 distorts nicelly
I modified 4 of my 828 channels for Pre fader Direct Outs, really easy to do If the problem is the fader like Ted suggests you should take it out and measure it. If you get no meassurment you can still probably fi the original fader.
You have to open it up, clean it and verify the wiper is making contact with the carbon track.
Worst case scenarios in a Fader problem:
Sometimes the wiper breakes in the fader, other times the carbon tracks disintegrates, if this is the case you’re only option is to replace the fader (probably other brand)

Hello Ted, I have and 828 with the first discrete preamp version with Belclere transformers, I love the sound of this console and would love to improve it as far as whats possible with nowadays modern components.
When you say “although that’s not the main problem on an 828” are you referring to noise?
What do you feel are the main problems and do you have any tips for possible improvements?
Ted Fletcher wrote:It would be worthwhile to use an external transformer… although that’s not the main problem on an 828.
My solution is to try an external 24V DC supply(about 2A rating is OK) and drive that directly onto the power rails.
That means that the phantom power would not operate of course.
I used a pair of 22V DC supplies, one to drive the mixer and the other (with the -ve to the mixer +22) for the phantom. That works brilliantly.
Hi Ted,
thanks so much for your reply.
I have at the moment a Power supply that it’s able to provide +24V at 2Amps, and has another rail fixed for 48V. I could use this one, just need to put it on an enclosure.
Thanks

Thank you so much Ted,
it’s amazing to see someone so helpful and dedicated to his products even when something was developed so long ago like the 828, but the fact that theres still so much interest and so many around just proves that it was an amazing piece of equipment.
“I removed the old internal power supply and drive it from an external switch-mode supply so I have zero hum and the noise is well down to modern digital levels; and I have that wonderful analogue sound. “ Hello Ted, I have an 828 MK1 mixer, I was thinking also in removing the internal PSU, and powering the desk by a modern designed Linear External Power supply.
Could you please let me know how many Amps do we need on the PSU?
2 amps would be enough?
I was thinking in using an 50VA 22-0-22 Toroid transformer
Thank you so much
Best regards
Tiago

So sorry to say that the middle of the console has not survived the years that it was in storage. The caps are just beyond knowing what was there & some of the wiring inside the board was tampered with ( lines cut ) . I have tried for the past 2 years to get info on her and just had no luck. I am keeping 8 channels and the rest will be sold off. The only things that worked on this board were the channels themselves. Sorry to see her get parted out but it’s the only thing that I can do. Thanks again for your help. DEYO
Hi Deyo,
it’s a shame that you had to part that beautiful desk out,
are you using the channels at the moment?
How do they sound?
Did you sell all of your modules, or do you still have something left?
My best regards
Thanks,
TS

Don’t all rush at once, but I have now located a stock of the special input gain pot used on both Mk 1 and Mk 2 828s.
Hi Ted,
do you still have these Pots?
I was checking in the schematics and the input gain pots seem to be different in the MK1 and the MK2, maybe I’m wrong but it seems that in MK1 the input gain pot is a 100k Rev Log but in the MK2 it uses a 22K Lin,
is this right ?
Thanks
Thank you so much for the information, I am also trying to get more info on this gear, strange it seems quite rare.
here is a picture of the front of the unitthanks
