TM88 Stereo airSOUND® Microphone

TFPRO TM88 appears to be a ‘conventional’ dual-capsule stereo capacitor microphone, but there is a significant difference;  the capsules and their low-noise FET pre-amps drive a special airSOUND preamplifier / decoder.

Engineers have always struggled to record both ‘presence’ and spatial information; conventional recording techniques fail at one or the other. Ted Fletcher’s ‘airSOUND’ (see www.airsound.com) recording and reproduction system goes back to basics and builds on the work of Alan Blumlein.  The result is a microphone system that is equally at home recording close vocals or distant orchestras, the sound is full-bodied and lush, both close and distant, and the stereo spatial information is faithfully reproduced.

The stereo output has perfect mono compatibility.

P38EX Stereo Compressor -

It's the P38 with a new face, and with features that some mastering engineers were looking for in their 'ultimate stereo compressor':

The compression sidechain is accessible for special effects filtering, and the main outputs are a variable mix of compressed and uncompressed signals..... and it looks amazing.

P110 STUDIO RECORDING CHANNEL

How do you get that very special voice sound?

It’s no secret that the secret to voice recording is attention to detail…. But it’s essential to have the quality there at all stages, especially right at the beginning, in the studio, when the original voice is recorded.

The mic amp is not ‘life or death’, it’s much more important than that!  The new P110 has transformer inputs of course, it uses multiple stages of amplification so that gain is kept low and the transient distortions that occur in most audio amplifiers are eliminated.  The vital compressor, essential for glueing the sound together, is optical and the EQ section is a tried and tested design using discrete amplifiers.

Although it’s new, the P110 behaves like an old friend, adaptable, comfortable and easy to use. Developed from the very successful P10, it’s a new classic, a sure way to produce sounds with body and presence in a digital world.

The forums are full of comments and questions from engineers asking why their recordings don’t sound ‘right’ when they are following the directions and using the right gear.  Why does an apple pie from a supermarket not taste anything like as good as one that grandmother made? The answers are remarkably similar! 

The supermarket pie has ‘uniformity’ processed into it; the ingredients may be pure and wholesome, but they are bland and ‘safe’. There are additives to preserve and packaging to enhance, the final result is pale and uninteresting.
